Moving from one tariff to another with the same supplier - how long does it take?

I'm currently on British Gas Websaver 10 which ends on 29th February, and plan to move onto another BG tariff (Online Energy).

Ideally I want to start on the new tariff on the day the old tariff ends, so I was just wondering when the best time to sign up for the new tariff was. Can I just switch over on the day (since I'm an existing customer), or should I do it in advance because it takes them some time to process it?

Thanks.

It should be almost instantaneous (unless you are with EDF, in which case it probably takes about 3 weeks).
I wouldn't switch until it has actually expired (on 1/3), otherwise you will be hit with an ETC if applicable to your tariff.
Worst case is that you'll have a couple of days on Standard tariff, or whatever the default is.

When/if you contact BG on the day or soon after maturity, unless you are a gambler have customer reads ready so tbe split can be accurately apportioned.

I bought my first home last year and just went with nPower as they supplied the previous owner. Just received my bill and I can get it far cheaper with them based on my usage. Will their change be relatively quick? Thanks to MSE I can get £30 cashback and nPower are offering £50 vouchers so long as I sign up before the end of today.

    With who?
A switch of supplier typically takes 4-6 weeks.
You won't get cashback switching tariffs with the same supplier, if that's what you mean.

When I changed to another tariff with npower in 2010 they emailed to confirm I was now on Sol19, however a letter arrived confirming prices and a start date for gas which was almost 3 weeks later although the electricity switch was immediate.

A previous tariff change took 3 weeks for both fuels :(
