Anyone still using IE7 on XP, Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP

Anyone still using Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP ?

Think it was released end of 2006.

Just wondered how slow you find it nowadays browsing the internet & loading pages ?

I'm on a 10MB/s broadband, my IE7 & XP SP3 are more or less up to date with microsoft updates.
Over the years there have been 26 updates for Internet Explorer

I think it's real slow loading pages, as it sorts through the updates patch code. Not sure if it's linked into Windows XP operating system code, so could be even more update code involved.

Haven't been able to upgrade as not enough room on hard drive until recently when I freed 2GB space.

How slow do you find IE7 browsing the internet & loading pages ?

Yes, still use IE7 with XP as a secondary browser to Opera. Don't know how your system or browser are set up, but when I do use it it isn't "slow" as such, just not as fast as Opera. Pages load quick enough.

Are you running with lots of add-ons/toolbars/whatever esle ??

and clear some space - windirstat, ccleaner, remove old restore points

both IE7 and 8 should be fast

I have used both IE7 and IE8 on XP and find both to be really frustrating. They are fine most of the time, but if a web-site is slow to respond, then the whole browser locks up. Using multiple tabs doesn't help as the browser just fails to respond to any mouse clicks until the slow site has loaded.

Firefox isn't perfect, but seems to be a lot better.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Don't have any additional toolbars.

I did look into Add-Ons 2 years ago, tried disabling/enabling them, don't think that solved problem.

As a test now, I have disabled all IE Add-Ons.

Have run msconfig, disabled all items in Startup & Services (except Microsoft ones).

It's still pretty slow loading a page.

If I look at Task Manager, the iexplore.exe process CPU usage will sit at 99% until it completes page load, when it returns to 0%.

It takes 15-20 seconds to load an MSE page, before CPU returns to 0%.

I'll have a good look at that, your thread.

Hopefully you can help me out.

I don't really want to upgrade to IE8 clean install, unless I have to, as that may just put heavier load on an old system. But I am tempted, as that seems an easy thing to try that might just solve the problem, but of course it might not.

System Restore is currently switched off.

I have freed 2GB of space recently.

How much free space do you have exactly? It's reommended to have at least 15% free space.

Most modern websites use XHTML/CSS -to display webpages. This requires heavy CPU processing and memory.
Though IE7 supports XHTML/CSS rendering, the speed of rendering of web pages really depends on your computers processor(CPU) speed and memory. Also, the IE7 rendering engine is not capable of supporting modern enhanced web features hence Microsoft and other websites wants you to upgrade to IE8 asap.

If your PC is old, you only have 2 options :-)
    a) upgrade it
    b) switch to firefox (v3) - the Version 3 rendering engine of firefox is much superior to IE7 and it is designed to work with older processors.

    Hope that helps.

I still use IE because it has some features I like which don't seem to have transferred to FireFox & Chrome, like copy & paste shortcuts of web pages to a folder.

On FireFox & Chrome the text & link are copied separately, which is

IE has toolbars, Chrome has been simplified too much, don't have toolbar across top.

    Today I've got 1.25GB on a 21.8GB partition, that's 5.7% free space.

System Virtual Memory is set to:
    Custom Size
    Initial Size: 384MB
    Maximum Size: 568MB

    Space available: 1855MB

Total paging size for all drives:
    Recommended: 2302 MB
    Currently allocated: 568MB

I originally set it to Custom Size when I had a lot less free space and haven't adjusted since,
    I probably should adjust this.
