I would like to switch Electricity provider, but not sure if I can.

We underpaid our standing order to Southern Elctricity last year, and currently owe them about £250 which we are slowly paying back, but are unable to pay back in full just at the moment.

If we switch to another provider, and the switch is arranged automatically by that provider, will we be forced to pay back southern electricity in full? Or will the outstanding amount be transferred to the new provider's account?

You owe the money to Southern, they may still allow you to pay off a bit each month, but technically they may want it all back at once but probably unlikely

    i agree with woby_tide

would very much doubt if they would make u pay it all at once

they will most def send you a final bill requesting the full amount - but just giv them a ring and as for a payment arrangement

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont think you will be able to switch provider while you are technically in debt to your current provider. If this the case, then the sooner you pay what you owe the sooner you can change.

Balances NEVER switch between suppliers, I know that for sure! You can try switching supplier, but your current one may not let you switch, because of the balance you owe. They may let you though, so I would try if you can find a better deal. You should still be able to pay your debt off each month even if you do change - as woby_tide says just phone them up if they do ask for payment, as long as you are carrying on paying, they'll be happy.

this is only if the balance is overdue.

if u on a budget plan, u arent in "debt" so they not allowed to make any objections to you transferring to another supplier

so basically u could owe £1000, but as long as this is included in a budget payment or direct debit plan - u can go to whoever u want

if they do raise an objection to u leaving, get on the phone to energywatch

I was with powergen and they took all the money o/s (about £350 as they'd messed up my dd's & not taken money for a yr!) as a single DD when I left them, so be sure to sort out a payment plan or you might have a nasty shock :o

Lucky for me, the money for my DD's all goes into a seperate acc each month so I dont get tempted to spend it all.
