Receiving debt collectors letters for previous owners

  • Debts are sold on, especially just before the six year statute-barred watershed and people who do owe money and still live at the property often claim they are a different person and the previous occupants have moved when they haven't. Debt collection agencies are wise to this and won't take any notice of phone calls, some won't even take any notice of letters either.

Keep a copy of your ID handy plus a copy of the Land Reg docs for when the bailiffs turn up at the door. They usually do eventually. Never let them in and ensure all doors and windows are locked when you go out.

Thanks all. I phoned the number on the letter this morning and, to my surprise, a very polite woman asked me for the reference number on the letter and then promised to remove my address from their database and chase up the previous owner another way. So, all sorted now.
