Every time I turn on my pc I get windows launch repair, then onto system restore, it takes ages before I eventually get onto windows. Since I've had the problem everytime I've shut down there have been several window updates required?

I know nothing about computers but did a full Avast scan and it showed

c:\windows\Installer\16998d.mspl.GDRGDR.cabl-023-vbc.exe-x86 Error 42 127{CAB archive is corrupted}

I don't know if this is linked with the problem?

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas how to clear the fault.

Please reply in simple terms.

Thanks.

  • how old is your computer?
and if you can get it to work, what is the make/model of the main hard drive inside?
secondly and above all, if you can get it to work back everything up NOW

My main hard drive recenly failed, starting with the start up repair as you have described, complete with the dreaded windows updates that take forever, and occaionaly crash.

The make/model of hard drive that i had was a samsung spinpoint F1 drive, and theres a good description of what happened here http://www.laptop-junction.com/toast/content/unreliable-disk-samsung-spinpoint-f1-hd103uj-1-tb-tera-byte

If you dont know what hard drive is inside your P.C go to my computer, and right click on the hard drive (C:\) and then selct properties and you should get a number such as HD130UJ A quick search on google with this number and the words +boot error (type in the number followed by the plus sign then the words boot error) should harvest some results.

If it looks like the hard drive is having problems you may need to buy a new /replacement drive.
Next question, do you have the windows install disks ( a fancy looking widnows DVd with a holgram on the front)

Thanks for your quick reply Richard.

It's a 5 year old Packard Bell, I'm not even sure what model.

The hard drive is ST325031 OAS SCSI I've googled as you suggested and may as well be reading Greek. :D

I've got no Windows install discs, it has Windows Vista home premium.

If it's a hard drive problem I don't suppose taking it back to factory restore would make any difference?

Sorted it, went to a microsoft link to 'check and fix windows installer', took nearly two hours, but all appears to be working fine now. Fingers crossed.
