Blocked drains? FREE unblocking service!

Hi,
I registered on this forum just for this post.
If you are suffering from blocked external drains or slow draining external sewage, then if you are a domestic homeowner and you share your drainage with a neighbour or neighbours, read this before you reach for the yellow pages.
Since October 2011, Yorkshire Water have adopted responsibility of privately owned shared domestic drainage systems, where if you share a drain system with someone else then YW will maintain and clear this drain FREE of charge. Even collapsed or damaged shared drains will be repaired by YW for FREE.
Why?
When shared drainage systems develop problems, residents often find themselves in dispute as to who is resposible for the cost of the repair or drainage company callout charges. Because court battles are a nuisance to YW having to provide mapped data on shared sewer systems, YW have chosen to simply adopt all shared domestic drains to remove disputes between domestic homeowners.
If you are suffering from external drainage sewer problems, then call Yorkshire Water on:
0845 1 24 24 24
Dont forget to mention the fact that they have adopted your sewer systems from local councils since October 2011 and you are having trouble determining who is causing and responsible for your blocked drains.
I hope this is helpful to you guys.
Regards
Midge
Ps. I had a blocked drain problem for 9 months, paid over £300 on seperate visits for Dynorod to clear the blockage and eventually got in contact with YW who cleared my drain and found why it was blocking with CCTV. Problem now completely sorted, cost to me £0

I wonder if any other Water Utilities offer this ?
Mine is an older house with a shared drain, not that we've ever had a problem but it's something to bear in mind. Thanks Op i'll check this out.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Yes, that is what I thought, I remember getting a letter from Thames Water.0 -
I would assume this is pretty standard.I've just had a lateral or indirect connection to the public sewer approved. It was a connection into an existing neighbours manhole. You have to incur the costs of making the connection yourself. Providing you have permission and works are carried out to the water authority's standards then they adopt the previously private manhole as it is now classed as public sewer.0

If the shared drain predated 1937, then it was the responsibility of the regional water utility anyway, even before the recent legislation. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I was only informed that this was a recent change for Yorkshire Water. Obviously some people will still be paying expensive callouts to drainage companies when they dont have to. I understand each region is different and therefore it is hard to generalise all legislation but I just want to make sure people may have the option to a free service rather than an expensive one.
We have never been informed of the change of adoption, I still see local drainage companies around my neighbourhood even though I know they are using shared sewers so obviously people need to be informed.

The legislation affects all of England & Wales and each water co. has sent it's own notification out to all customers, I can assure you that it is not just YW!No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Yes, thanks for the reminder.0 -
Just found this thread after searching online; we've got a blocked drain at the moment and after it happened in the middle of last year I actually knew about the responsibility change in October. So this time I called Yorkshire Water and we're currently waiting for someone to come out.
What annoyed me most though is that there's absolutely NOTHING on YW's website about this, other than the 'Big Transfer' page which doesn't tell you what to do if there's a problem. That Southern Water website someone linked above is far, far better. Their FAQ is more extensive, there's a page about what happens if you report a problem and it actually tells you on their Contact Us page what number to ring etc. None of which is on YW's site. Absolutely stinks (wahey) of Yorkshire Water trying to avoid telling customers about the change so they just get private companies out instead, which is pretty disgraceful IMO.0 -
