Travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions

Hello Forum,

I'm travelling to Australia with my wife for 22 days and would like to know the best insurer? I'm not going to get cover for my medical condition (was quoted £1100 from one insurer) simply because it's too expensive. So, who are the best insurers if I do not declare my medical condition? (Obviously, any related problems occuring on the trip I would not be able to claim for.)

This is tricky as it's quite a specialised question and I have no idea about who to go to...

Any expert ideas more than welcome, even about who to approach!

It really does pay to shop around. A couple of years ago the highest I was quoted for two weeks worldwide excl USA/Caribbean was £1200 - a good deal of shopping around and I was able to reduce that to just over £200.

Have you recently been hospitalised as this can have a massive impact on premiums?

I would personally not consider travelling without insurance for PEMCs unless it was something exceptionally minor that I was certain would not cause me to cancel/curtail a holiday (although from the high price you have quoted that would not appear to be the case)
  • Both myself and hubby have medical conditions that we have chosen not to get cover for in the past due to the cost of the cover. We live day in day out with this and we know we will be ok for two weeks away so we take the risk and we use Top Dog insurance they give you the chance to cover the condition or opt out.

But surely if you know you will be OK then there is no risk is there?

The cost of insurance cover for you would suggest that in general there is a risk. Do you have access to the tens of thousands of pounds that a medical repatriation might cost if you fall ill with this condition or any condition that could arise in association with it?
  • Have a look at 'all clear travel' you will need to declare all your medical conditions but can then elect to exlude them from the cover. Without knowing your med cond can't comment on the price but I declare 4 different conditions and get a reasonable quote, £56 for 6 weeks in new zealand a couple of years ago.
Some companies will insure then ask for a separate payment to cover existing conditions, ones I've used before cost an addition £15 -24

  • Please do not just not declare whatever condition it is. If it is found out that you kept relevant information from them, then they will almost certainly cancel all cover, and even if whatever you try to claim for is unrelated to your condition the claim will be denied. Find someone that will either give you cover for a good price, or will give you cover excluding your condition that you will have declared to them.

I agree. You must declare you conditions even if you are going to state that you want them excluded.

If there has been no change in your condition and no change in medication in the past 12 months then https://www.eta.co.uk might suit.
