Bought a whirlpool microwave. The paperwork inside said "all Whirlpool products have a 2 yr guarantee" not just on one leaflet but two. On their website where you register the product it says 1 year only. Nowhere on the leaflets supplied with the machine does it say E&OE or any other get out phrase. I take the view they are bound by the 2 year term. I should add nowhere does it say you have to register the product via the website the retailer advised this when I queried the lack of a registration card with the machine.(I also realise my contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer but the guarantee is a useful addition)

You may well find that the microwave that you purchased was intended for sale in Ireland.
Whirlpool appliances sold over there all have a 2 year warranty as opposed to 1 year given in the UK.
As the leaftets stating the 2 year warranty were supplied after you had paid and did not therefore influence you decision to buy, and it also appears that they were supplied in error, you will have a hard, if not impossible job to get a 2 year warranty.0 -

Thanks, but one of the leaflets which quotes a 2 yr guarantee period is marked "For customers in the UK and Northern Ireland" Hard to see how they can claim Southern Ireland only on that wording. As it was an internet sale the deal is not final until the grace period is up therefore at this stage I am free to keep or reject and the dodgy guarantee might be a deciding factor.0 -

In the post above yours the OP states one of the leaflets says "For customers in the UK and Northern Ireland"
jonandfun, given that I assume the item is still in full working order, why not just wait and see if the warranty is ever needed - just make sure you keep the paperwork!0 -
I know a lot of manufacturers now are differentiating between an internet purchase and a retail showroom purchase, the latter having better warranty periods. Ths is to enable retailers to add value to a shop purchase as they cannot compete with internet pricing.
One of the manufacturers I deal with is giving 3 year P&L Warranties for shops, but 1 year for internet.
Don't know if that would have anything to do with it, But I am almost sure Whirlpool and some other white goods co's are doing this with Euronics and not the likes of curry's/comet.0 -
I bought the Whirlpool Microwave earlier this month and there are two guarantee documents with it.
One is for the UK & NI for one year and the other is for 2 years and is clearly marked on the front page : For Republic of Ireland customers only".0 -
Whirlpool came back to me and will honour 2 yr guarantee period, so result!0

Jonandfun, I have a whirlpool dishwasher that is faulty after only 18 months, called Whirlpool to be told the 2 years is for Ireland only (not sure what they do differently in Ireland to get double?) and to be told it would cost another £160 for repair, how did you get them to extend yours to 2 years?

Why not go back to your retailer and put your case that way? He is the one you have a contract with, not whirlpool.
Most likely, you will need to get a report done stating that it has an inherent fault from new, before they will do anything about it.
If you play nice and play your cards right, the retailer may be able to say that you bought the appliance within the past 12 months and get it fixed under warranty. Thats as long as it hasn't already been registered already with whirlpool. I have done that numerous times for something just out of warranty, give a blag invoice dated within warranty, just to have less grief off the consumer.
Worth a go.0
