As stated in the replies, taking the external drive is not really an option as part of the usage will be on the plane and we all know how little room you get in the first place. Burning to the hard-drive OR to a USB flash drive is certainly the preferred options.

I supposed what I needed pointing to was a simply use conversion program. In effect, on ewhere you shove the disk in a drive, select something like "create file to be viewed on your hard drive" and then press "go". (Aint that much of a techy so simple to use is the main priority). It maybe that I have software on my laptop capable of doing it already but without knowing what formats to look for etc I really dont know.

Daft question, I take it you cant simple drag and drop the "disc" to a folder on the hard drive?

DVDFab free is very simple to use and once you've converted the film all you need is a media player. I would do the conversion on a more powerful computer though and transfer the files over! DVDFab is also able to remove the encryption of commercial DVDs.

I can't see how there would be copyright concerns. The OP stated the DVDs were bought by their Daughter, so she owns the copy and wants to view it on a device of her choice.

While I completely disagree with the legal position; to copy your own DVDs for your own use is against copyright law.

It seriously needs to get changed, and things are moving that way.

At least in the interim many big distributors are packaging DVDs and Blu-Rays with free download versions which you can view on any portable device.

Things do need to change. I don't think its in the interest of public justice though to prosecute someone for watching a DVD they own lawfully on a device of their choosing.

Use a DVD Ripper to Rip the DVD to the videos which can be played for her Netbook video player.

    Perhaps, but not that one.

Something like FairUseWizard 2 Light or HandBrake will do the job for free.
Careful that you don't install any bundled Toolbars.

No, you need to create a disk image, otherwise you will get a collection of files and folders which you could play if you were technically minded enough to know which files to look for and what program to use them with....

    This is not necessary.

I have all my DVD's (several TB) backed up to USB drives and view them from there. This is the method I use:-

    1) Open windows explorer.
    2) Plug in the USB drive and create a folder for each DVD. e.g. Harry Potter, or Titanic etc.
    3) Insert the DVD into your drive and (once detected) single click the DVD drive on the left hand side of the screen.
    4) On the right hand side you will see 2 folders; 1 x audio and 1 x video.
    5) Simply copy (drag and drop) the video folder (you don't need the audio one) onto the folder that you made in #2 above.
    6) You didn't say which DVD program that you use (I use WinDVD), but to view each DVD, there should be an option to 'view DVD from folder'. So simply select the folder of the DVD that you want to view.

    Thats it. Good luck.

Also, to save a bit of space (if thats an issue), copy the DVD into the folder that you make using DVDShrink (free on the net).

btw, you mentioned above about 'burning the DVD onto your HDD' and 'converting it'. You're not 'burning' or 'converting' anything doing this, you're simply copying it :)

Agreed, and I'm sure most (all?) DVD players will.

I use DVDShrink, but VLC is a very good (but very basic) free one.

Just try DVDshrink to copy them over firstly. It'll make them much smaller, wont convert to formats etc, but you can also check easily what you want copied, ie the main movie. It is a very old program (and there is a version being sent around that asks you to pay; run away from this one) so may not be able to do all due to copy protections etc.

Prolly need to set aside a few hours to do this for several movies though.
  • Legally you cannot convert them even if you own the disk and its for your own purpose, there has forever been the discussion our copyright law is out of date and that people should be allowed to make MP3s of their CDs etc. Whilst it is technically illegal the only way you'd ever be done for it is if they were wanting you for something much bigger, couldnt get the evidence and thought a prosecution is better than none.

I personally would use Handbrake as a very good application. I would suggest potentially using a more power computer to do the conversion and then transfering them back to the netbook afterwards. Other ripping applications would be fine as they simply make an image that you can play so no reencoding required but much bigger end files
