Five of my six children had paper rounds while at school. I used to have a good/cheap but filling warm breakfast ready for them when they got in from their deliveries. Set them up for the day at school. We kept chickens and ducks so eggs were usually available.

All you need is a bit of batter mixture, then you can drizzle all sorts of stuff on top, or add icing sugar for sweet ones, or cheese and bacon for savoury ones. You could even make the batter the night before and leave in the fridge, so all you have to do is cook them.
    !!!

    Thanks PG.
Would i just make the batter up and leave it in the fridge overnight? Woud i have to cover it or anything?
  • I used to make little Scotch Pancakes for one of my dds - it's a bit thicker than normal pancake batter, makes lovely little ones. I would make a batch at the weekend and then just heat them up during the week as she wanted them.

I now have the problem that my 2 arent interested in breakfast - they're too busy getting their hair and make up done:o DD1 takes some of those breakfast biscuits (cheap in Asda so have stocked up;)), and dd2 has a little bowl of dry c00kie crisp cereal and a cuppa - not great breakfasts, but I've never enjoyed breakfast much either;)

And yes, if you make normal pancake batter it keeps just fine in the fridge - we often make them for pudding in the evening and I make too much batter so leave it in the jug with a plate over the top. It can separate a bit and not look very tasty but after another whisk it's just fine:D
I really need to sort out a new signature!

I had three girls and three boys - they all ate breakfast - I am a breakfast person myself but their dad never was.

  • Hi Cleggie.

I am also a teaching assistant working in a high school with kids aged 10-14 who have autism. I also like it but like Pixiechick99 said, the money is dire! Wouldn't want to be a teacher though.

Well done on not going mad spending your £100. What a lovely unexpected bonus & well done to already having the money saved for your daughter's trip. I have not been so good & am panicking that the balance of my son's school trip needs to be paid soon which I should have saved up by now & haven't. I would also like to contribute to my daughter's trip which was meant to be being paid for half by her & half by my ex OH who paid a bit & then said he couldn't pay anymore!

On the porridge topic, I always have porridge for breakfast but unfortunately neither of my kids will eat it and we go through so much cereal because they as well as breakfast, they both usually have a bowl each before they go to bed!

  • Hi Cleggie

Just thought I would drop in say well done for starting a diary. I am from the grocery challenge.

I am a single mum with 2 dd and am on a low income and in a lot of ways am in a similar situation to you. I am currently trying to get back to work part time but it is hard trying to get good childcare in place.

I am trying to reduce my grocery spends and am working on it but feel the same as you that it is the only area that I try and justify spending as I try not to buy make-up, clothes etc unless really needed.

    Keep up the good work.

I made some batter accidentally the other day. We were going to have filled yorkies, but then changed our minds. I'd forgotten we'd changed our minds, and made the batter anyway!!! :wall: I just shoved it into the fridge overnight, didn't even bother covering it. It did separate a bit, but I gave it a good old whisk up, and the yorkies were lush!

    Good morning all

Gosh, i think that waking up at 7am on a Sunday when you dont have to, should be made illegal! :rotfl:

When the ex took the kids out yesterday he took them to go and see his parents. His parents gave the kids £40 each towards the school trips too!
I have put that into their bank accounts as i dont need it for their trip, so they can save it.

Pixie- i think scotch pancakes are a lovely idea too. When you heated them up, did you just put them in the microwave, or did you fry them for a few mins?

I am trying to train myself to become a breakfast person as i am trying to lose weight, and everyone says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day...so i am trying it!!

LTSally- is it a residential trip that your daughter is going on? My oldest sons trip is a week away down in Cornwall, and my youngest sons is 3 nights down in Cornwall.

Tracey- thanks for popping in to say hello! Childcare can be really hard to find cant it! Wheni moved here i didnt realise that the childcare situation was so dire! I thought about becomming a childminder until my youngest is secondary school age (and therefore old enough to look after himself for an hour or 2) but my house is so tiny that i would only be allowed 2 kids at a time!

PG, Piq, Florenceem, - thanks for the advice re brekkie, i think that making the batter the night before sounds like a plan, then give it a good whisk in the morning. Saving time AND money! YAY!!!:T:j
