Problems with Nationwide ATM in Spain

I've just returened from a very pleasant few days in Seville. I didn't have many Euros's with me so I found an ATM after arriving in the City. First Bank BBVA asked if I wanted cash converted to £ or withdrawal charged in Euro's. I went with the Euro option (knowing i'd get a bettter ROE) but it refused to let me have the cash this way! No problem (I thought) try another Bank, so went to the Banco Santander across the road. Same problem - the Bank would only allow me to withdraw the money at it's ROE, and to add insult to injury charge me 2% commission as well!

Got me worried here.
I'm going to Spain next Tuesday and have planned to draw cash( Euro's) via ATM's using a N/wide Debit card. I understood this was the best way, as recommended by lots of previous postings on this forum.

I use my Nationwide card all the time in Spain to withdraw cash. Never had a problem with any bank. I've used it all over South America and Aus etc. No problems. My wife and son have them too and no problems.0

Same problem here regarding running out of Euros!
We have just come back from Valencia and although we did not use the Nationwide card to draw cash (we only have the Nationwide CC) we did not have any problems drawing from our Lloyds TSB debit card. We chose to have our charge converted to £'s on withdrawal (£2.00).
Moral of the story I guess is ... make sure you have enough Euros in the first place!! "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion". _party_0 -
Nationwide don't charge you, but they have no control over whether the foreign bank will charge you0

Have used my NW debit card & CC all over the world with no problems.
You may just have been unlucky with the local banks' system0 -

Yes so have I - in probably 60 of the over 80 Countries I've travelled to! This is what got me worried, happening not once but twice!0 -
Not NW's fault, fault of the Spanish banks.

I feel more comfortable now. We'll just take a few €'s and use the debit card.
