Debit on my statement

What exactly is this 'Debit'?

On my statement there's the usual withdrawls and deposits, however something worried me this morning.

I read my recent statement and I saw 'Cash Withdrawl' which was me taking out x amount of cash. Then there's my 'Direct Debits' for insurance, net access etc. Also I have 'Card Transaction' which is when I buy something from a store using my Debit card - however there is also a 'Debit' too which I have no answer too. It's usually around £10, or a little higher, but always a round number as though it's being drawn out of a cash machine, and there's a £123.39 taken as Debit too just before Christmas.

Now I do know I had a habit of drawing out the odd £10 for buying pizzas etc. On these 'Debits' there's the bank sort code, the date, and another number.

Is the 'Debit' the same as the 'Cash Withdrawl'?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

If 'Debit' is the only word appearing next to that entry on your statement you need to ask your Bank for an explanation. That is a generic word meaning money taken out of your account.

  • Aye, getting on that asap in the morning. I have found out what the 123.39 was though. I found a receipt from the bank for £123.39p, it was me paying my water bill for the half year! Seemingly when you pay a bill at the bank it doesn't show the company that took the cash, just the transaction.

Not sure what alot of these £10/20/30s are, I am guessing it's me again, using the ATM, but I will be checking with Natwest in the morning.

    Cheers :)

I'm wondering whether if you withdraw cash from a machine not owned by your own bank then it might just show up as debit, rather than cash withdrawal.

Usually "Debit" on your statement would denote a counter transaction. Eg. you have gone to the cashier in branch & withdrawn money or paid a bill at the counter with money from your account like your Water Bill
Thanks to all who post comps :A :T
