hi, posting on behalf of my dad, he has just had letter of eon about his gas account, stating that since 2002 they have been billing him on a 5 digit account instead of a 4 digit meter (think this is the right way round), so basically he has been underpaying his account, in the letter states he owed £2500 on gas over the years but they can only charge him for the last year so he owes nearly £360 in arrears.
The letter asks him to get in touch with them but he doesn't want to do this till he knows where he stands.
He thinks because its an error on their part he should just start fresh from the date the letter was sent and not owe them anything.
anyone help or had a similar thing happen to them
had a look through the thread and couldnt see much that was similar.cheers in advance.

The mix up between imperial and metric meters happens quite often but mostly the other way round to your fathers case, ie been paying too much.

I think that if the true cost is £2500 owed and they are going to ask him to pay ONLY £360 he has got off very lightly so grab it.

No, he is liable for the last 12 month consumption. It is still open to negotiate payment terms.

On the face of it, Eon have been very fair on billing the adjustment and have applied the "No Back-Billing beyond 12 months agreement" to this debt, so I'm afraid it's a kosher debt that has to be paid

However, if finding the £360 is a problem Eon will agree to collect it by installments over time, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK and don't accept the first figure they come up with if it's too high to manage, as in these circumstances it's negotiable - BE AWARE that future Gas bills will be higher and once that installment figure is agreed, Eon will go ape with Debt Collectors etc. if an installment payment is missed.

Check this meter for yourself, (If possible post a photo here), as to how many whole numbers it has, and also check if it's marked Ft3 or M3

    Morning durham05,

I hope you don't mind me popping on to this thread.:)

I agree with the other posters.

As we’ve followed the billing code the £360.00 sounds correct, and will have to be paid back.

All your Dad needs to do is give us a call and we can arrange a payment plan that will suit him.

Let me know if you need any other advice.:D

    Thanks

Hi, just to update went to the complaints dept with this, got a personal complaints person who offered a reduction of £50 plus a payment plan, dad wasn't happy with this went bk to them with the offer of 1/2 the amount as a full payment which settled the account in full and ended the complaint too. So cheers Eon and ta every1on here too

its much more common for the mix up to be the other way round and theres one thing i ve found about people paying a ridiculously low rate for their gas, they are quite happy to sit back for years without checking if theres something amiss .If it had been the other way round and his gas bill was three times higher he d be on the phone instantly.surely he could recognise he was paying peanuts. He should really thank his lucky stars about all the freebie gas hes had and pay up the derisory ammount Eon are requesting. The meter readers are the ones at fault when they read the meter and can see the number of dials differ on their handheld computors. When I have spotted this mix up in the past and told the customers, I was called a "jobsworth" for ending the super cheap gas bills.
