selling problem buyer wants refund

We all make mistakes but I would have messaged him in that event and asked him whether he still wanted it, or wanted a partial refund to cover the missing piece (it happened to me with a pack of cards I sold that I made a mistake when copying across a listing template I was using to sell the whole collection).Thank you this is what I thought and I will mail him back telling him this.
I know the piece that should have been on there is missing but that is how I received it and didn't realise there was supposed to be another part attached till it was pointed out to me after the sale but as I had put plenty of pictures you could see that the piece wasnt on there I can't understand why he bought it in the first place.
I think it's important to make sure buyers know exactly what they are buying, and not mentioning something in the description or having discrepancies between the description and the photograph are two of the most common ways that sellers get problems with their sales. It's not your fault, exactly, but it is still your responsibility to provide a clear and comprehensive listing. At this point in things it will probably get back to you undamaged so allow him to return and refund all costs associated with the sale. Then you can resell with the condition clearly stated in the listing and in the photographs and things will go a lot smoother.
EDIT: yes, I'm intrigued too about what could have been missing. Good luck with this."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

Now I'm really intrigued, what was missing?
It is a car stereo and apparently there should be mounts to attach to a dash board which are not on there, well no other stereo ive ever seen has had these mounts so that is why I didnt realise they were missing.
It was returned this morning and Ive refunded and given the return postage.
Am i also right in thinking that Im right to open a case requesting cancellation in order to get my fvf's back, I have emailled the buyer to ask him if he will.0 -
Providing you are on good terms with them still I would think they would cancel for you.It is a car stereo and apparently there should be mounts to attach to a dash board which are not on there, well no other stereo ive ever seen has had these mounts so that is why I didnt realise they were missing.
It was returned this morning and Ive refunded and given the return postage.

And so you should!Ive just received a message asking if I will refund the return postage as well!!
Sellers who list items and think "Ill be fine" really get my goat.
So many buyers are receiving items that are not as described because they are broken or have bits missing etc and a buyer has to send the item back with tracking (which costs more) in order to get their money back.
So buying an item that you think is going to be great turns out not to be and costs a buyer a few quid in the process just so they can get their money back.
The other poster is correct. Ebay cant force you to give him back the return postage but you should do because it was your mistake. That is the decent thing to do and probably the only way youll avoid negative feedback and stars.
ETA. Sorry, I didnt read all the thread fully before replying.
Its great to hear that you have refunded him everything as really decent sellers are hard to come by.
He will now feel better and might treat feedback kindly

This has basically been resolved, buyer is happy and the sale is now ready to be cancelled."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4
