Taking my car to Europe -Insurance and Breakdown.

My Direct Line policy covers me for the "minimum level required by law" I'm going to go ahead and assume this isn't enough, so am I better off asking the little red telephone to amend my policy, or can I buy it elsewhwere? (Will Direct Line get all "upset" if I do??)

I've got Green Flag breakdown from Direct Line, and likewise, want to know if I should/can amend or go elsewhere.

Haven't rang either of them up for a quote yet.

I've driven abroad before, but never taken my own car so I'll be glad to recieve any other advice from more experienced moneysaving drivers! I'm going through the Tunnel to Leipzig, via Brusells and Koln.

P.S. On a moneysaving note, I'd just like to share that I bought the EuroTunnel standard return for £40 (clubcard!), will be booking a hotel with expedia via a few thousand nectar points, and another hotel using up some Clubcard points to buy Avios+exra Avios, and the Avios to pay outright for the hotel!

You should be able to 'upgrade' both your insurance and breakdown cover either for the duration of your holiday or for the remainder of your policy. Sometimes it may work out the same or less for the entire remainder of your policy than just two weeks, ask for a price for both when you ring.

It'll be third party only. If you're fully comp you're probably better off asking DL for an upgrade, it usually isn't much.

In terms of breakdown cover, I can recommend http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/breakdown/ - £59 per year for full Europe-wide cover. Maybe worth considering if you're near to renewal time with your current provider.
