Tesco - Compulsory Legal Cover - Car Insurance

Just had my renewal for car insurance from Tesco and tried to get them to price match a cheaper quote I received minus the legal cover.
Tesco told me that I had to have the legal cover as it's compulsory!
On every policy I have ever compared legal cover is shown as an extra, normally about £26, so can Tesco insist on including this within their policies or are we going to see a PPI type scenario in the future??

As far as I am aware the only compulsory car insurance is 3rd party.
Anything else is up to you - time to switch companies?0 -

If this is uninsured loss and legal expenses cover it is certainly not compulsory. In fact the only insurance you are required to have for a car is what is called " Act Only" this is the bear minimum of cover of injury to third parties. There is no legal requirement to have insurance to cover damage to third party vehicle or property.
Maybe the mean it is an integral part of that policy not an optional extra as is usual.0 -
Think they mean compulsary with their policys, not legally. Admiral now do the sameDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

The wording on the policy reads:
"Motor Legal Protection (Tesco Legal Guard) is now included in your policy as standard".
So for those that may have similar protection encompassed within another policy, or just don't want it, it is not possible to reduce the quote by deselecting it.
Agree with Quentin that the word complimentary is more appropriate.
Thanks for your replies.0 -

.
Are you sure about that0 -
Yes, they should have said complimentary.
A few insurers and brokers build LE into the product and so there is no option to remove it. Some are giving it away (they get paid by the LE insurer anyway) and others build a cost in0 -
Their website saysMotor Legal Protection (Tesco Legal Guard) (limitations apply). This is now included in all new Tesco Car Insurance policies0

There is
s.145 (3)(a), Road Traffic Act 1988:
'Must insure such person, persons or classes of persons as may be specified in the policy in respect of any liability which may be incurred by him or them in respect of the death of or bodily injury to any person or damage to property caused by, or arising out of, the use of the vehicle on a road or other public place in Great Britain'.0 -
i apologise and stand corrected I was always led to believe that act only just referred to injury to the person and not damage to property.0
