Moving a gas meter

We are currently planning a new kitchen and space is limited so I would like to resite the gas meter, which is currently in a cuboard under the sink to the external wall, this will then give me a useable cuboard in which to put pull out recylcing bins.
I realise that this isn't cheap as we enquired about it several years ago in our previous property, but can anyone give me a rough idea of cost and also who we need to contact to get the work done?

You need to contact whomsoever owns the meter. As the price usually associated with this work is totally unrelated to the actual work required giving an approximate generalised cost is impossible. Why don't you just ask them?

I have my gas meter in exactly the same place and rang the Gas board to get a quote for moving it when we bought the house a year ago. Their price was circa £1000! Unsurprisngly, we kept the meter where it was and built a cupboard around it!0

can a gas safe engineer not move it?0

you would need met1 or met2 to move a meter & then only from the incoming supply, if the main supply pipe needs to be moved that can only be done by the gas supplier, it used to be transco but now that varies by area, in my area it's southern gas networks.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
gas meters dont take up all that much space. Can it not just be moved to the very back of the cupboard?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

afaik, transco have a set price. last i heard it was about 700 quid.Get some gorm.0

Having done this, I can tell you it is 10000% not worth it. It is expensive, but more than that it is a nightmare to organise. We had to move it as part of a major refurb (it ended up in the centre of a bedroom ceiling otherwise) and it took over 4 months, 3 missed appointments, and finally me crying on the phone, and then in person to get them to do it.
And I am not a crier at all! It was the most frustating part of a £100k+ renovation project.0 -
I've just been quoted £680 by SGN to move my meter outside. It's an absolute joke. I'll be complaining to ofgem.0

It's a joke because it's an extortionate charge for a very small amount of work. And of course I am going to complain to Ofgem. It might not help me but if enough people make a fuss about it then things could change in future.0
