post avis car rental charge: help!

today we discovered that avis car rental had taken £32 out of our bank account 4 months after we had hired a car from them ... we were not notified they were going to do this and after a telephone conversation and email it transpires that avis have charged us, without telling us, for passing our information on to a firm for not paying a £2.50 toll - we have no recollection of missing this toll but to make matters worse they have also listed two other £2.50 missed tolls as down to us - these other 'penalties' were incurred three weeks after we had returned the vehicle and three weeks after our rental agreement was terminated. we have queried this but so far avis have not replied. any help appreciated

Where did you hire the car and where/how was the toll avoided?0 -
Just tell them you'll pay for the missed toll when you had the car but not the ones after you'd returned the car. However, you won't just be paying £2.50, there will be administration fees to be added. Tolls usually have cctv evidence of cars where the tolls haven't been paid.
In your terms and conditions it will say that you may be debited after the rental for any subsequent charges that may be due.0 -
Was the charge for the missed toll, or as you said "for passing our information on to a firm"? If the latter, you will presumably hear from the firm to recover the toll fee + their admin charges as well.
Your contract probably makes you liable for this fee.
However, if they've passed you details on for other tolls you didn't miss, it seems like an error on their part and they need to sort it out.0 -
it was just for passing our info on - i was under the impression they were obliged to inform us before they took money from our bank account though -0

ireland - possibly dublin- don't know where the toll's been missed because usually you pay them as you come across them0

Yes that's what I wondered. Have done a bit of digging, it might have been on the M50 between Dublin and Belfast. Did you use that road more than once?

just the once - it turns out the other two toll charges were not down to us as they were three weeks after we'd returned the car - this has made no difference to the charges to us though....0
