domain for a charity

Hello,

I'm about to purchase a domain and hosting for a local charity group. I've seen .org.uk domains for just over £5 for 2 years which is a pretty good deal but can anyone beat this OR can anyone recommend places I could buy the domain where they'd give a proportion to charity?

I'm guessing the answer is no but I thought i'd push my luck.

Thanks in advance.

  • Considering we have absolutely zero cash yes but I know its a good deal as I posted already I just wanted to know if it could be beaten or if a charity could benefit from the purchase of a domain.

Unlikely. They have to pay fees to Nominet for .org.uk domains, so they will try to sell you web-hosting as well. Think of the cost as about 1½ Big Macs, which will put it into (a) context...

    Hi,

Couple of useful / useless bits of info about UK domain names etc....

£5 + VAT for a 2 year registration is the 'trade rate' for the registrar so anywhere near this price is good :)

Watch for 'release fees' or hidden charges should you wish to move to a different provider - this is the normal trick to get the profit back!

Make sure that the registrar puts it in YOUR NAME - the 'not so nice' registrars put it in their name and then charge £100's {yes I've seen it done!} to release it into your name once you find out....

Watch the hosting element - will it be with adverts for example.

If you or any one else would like to know more, just give me a shout !

    Regards

    Grant.
  • Hi,

To be very very carefull about who owns the domain, and how much it will cost you to move your domain.

I pay about 6.50 inc vat for 2 years and seems cheapest. look at

https://www.123-reg.com see what you think , i use them but there are loads of companies out there.

    For independant advice see
http://www.nominet.org.uk/ for info address ending on .uk

    I would buy a .org.uk addresss
