Someone has keyed my car - how much to repair?

When I got in my car last night I noticed that it's been keyed on both doors on the drivers side, 3 scratches. How much roughly am I looking at to repair this and does it need to be a garage or is someone like Halfords/Chips Away as good?

I'm so annoyed, I've only had my car since October and it was in pretty much perfect condition. Just had it valeted and cleaned as about to sell it as well :(

Trying to work out if I'm better off taking the hit and getting repaired to sell or taking the hit when I sell...

Try a local mobile car paint restorer. I found one that charged me £70 and he did it all at my place of work.
  • If you wait until selling and plan to sell as part-x to a main dealer they reduce their offer by £100 per panel if it is as deep as the undercoats, much less than taht if it can just be polished out
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

How deep and long are the scratches. You could try repairing yourself with something like chipex or a kit like this http://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=6912
  • car in perfect condition yet your selling it makes ferfect sense that does.

without seeing it i couldnt tell you and only hazard a guess wich is pointless.
  • Without seeing the damage, have a go at them with something like Autoglym Super Resin Polish, youll be surpriosed how much you can lift these things out with just a little elbow greese and a pot of polish.
I like SRP, use it a lot - be carful with T-cut unless you know what you are doing.... too many stories of people polishing through to bare metal by accident!

If selling it and not going to get another car, then just make a claim on the insurance.

If going to get another car and don't want to affect your no claims, go to a few back street body shops to get a few quotes for just the door, not the whole side of the car, hopefully the buyer won't notice....

G3 Scratch remover is great but it says on the bottle if the scratch stops your finger nail when you run it over the scratch it's too deep.

Halfrauds scratch repair kits are pretty rubbish as far as colour matches go. If you want to try one definitely check the match on a piece of scrap before using it on the car.

I'd go with a professional job if the G3 doesn't work.

Thanks for your extremely helpful post. I bought my car as I needed to drive to work and have since got a new job that I can walk to in 20 minutes so I'm selling it as it's only getting driven a handful of times a month, my insurance is over £1k and it's due for tax, MOT etc in June so it's pointless keeping it.

I can see the silver underneath so I don't think a DIY job is going to do it :(
