Dialup modem not working on laptop

Hi all,
I have an odd situation with a laptop. The laptop is a Satellite Pro from Toshiba - it belongs to a friend. She uses it to dial up PAYG broadband from the internet.
Recently, she's been having trouble with the laptop. She supposedly installed some digital camera software and she can no longer connect to the internet.
I have tested the line, and it appears fine. The modem drivers etc in Device Manager appear fine. However, the laptop can't dial out. You double-click on the icon and it doesn't make any internet connection noises except that sound like when you first switch on the power to your computer speakers. After about 2 seconds, it comes back with not being able to get a dial tone.
I have checked that the dial tone is there. I have created a seperate dial up networking option to bypass the ISP software and no joy.
Any ideas?
Thanx

What is this 'digital camera software'? Most camera software is unnecessary, so try restoring to before this was installed or un-installing this software. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
or try removing the modem from device manger and let it re-detect on boot upEx forum ambassador

Try using the at command with hyperterminal
that will tell you if the PC and Modem can communicate with each other.

Are you sure you idn't accidentally put the phone plug into the LAN socket (which is the same fitting)? I did this once DOH!0
