overpay a BT to virgin cc - surplus to current account?

Just double checking what I think Ive understood from reading other threads....
Ive just been accepted for RBS 22 months @ 0% 7K limit.
Need to do a £2.5 balance transfer to pay off a virgin coming to end of 0%.
If I transfer £6k from the new rbs to virgin, what will happen to the surplus £3.5k? I may need thee cash very soon, so just wondered whether that was an option.

Not to say that it will or will not work, but I have done just that, slightly different circumstances but it did work.
See my thread for further info. I would link to it but I'm on my iPad and it's not so easy
