Cutting Back Hours in One Branch & Recruiting in Another?

Hi All,

My friend works for a company who are going through financial difficulties. They have told them that there will be cut backs and perhaps some redundancies. They are doing the cut back of hours on a points system based on time keeping, sickness, performance etc, those with the least points will have hours cut. If this does not help, staff have been told that they will be making redundancies.

However, at the same time they are advertising full and part time positions in another branch a few miles away. Can they make redundancies and cut hours in one branch and recruit in another at the same time?

They claim the branch my friend is in is the one that is under performing and that is why they cut backs are happening there.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
