Nationwide - So its "Our" fault then ?

Concerning the loss of the laptop and subsequent £980k fine:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/6371089.stm

The directors say "its not fair if they pay the fine". So its "fair" that their customers are expected to pay it then ?

After all, its the directors that in return for a handsome salary and sizable bonuses, are responsible for ensuring that the appropriate business management systems (which no doubt include security and data protection) put in place by their senior managers who they have recruited are effective and being used.

This arrogant attitude is just another example of the Nationwide being more like a PLC each day. I will remind them of this come August when my fixed rate mortgage term comes to an end and I look for a new deal.

At the end of the day, the customer will pay anyway through increased charges, sorry, fees. That's what these companies are all about - making money. Anything else is secondary.
Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!

They appear to have learned the necessary 'get out of jail free' rhetoric from our rulers (sorry, politicians).

The days of 'the buck stops at the top' and the head man falling on his sword ceased long ago (about 1997 by my reckoning).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

What a bunch of hypocrites Nationwide are.

Their entire advertising campaign for the last two years has been based upon a fictional high street bank manager who is greedy, arrogant and has nothing but contempt for his customers. Apparently he represents everything the Nationwide don't represent.

Their message is "Nationwide - Proud To Be Different"

Yet getting their customers to foot the £980,000 bill for their own mistakes sounds exactly like something that fictional bank manager would do.

This is the same Nationwide whose new fat cat executive says that it is fairer if everyone pays a fee for current accounts.
