not so "Quick Transfer"

electronically set up my bank account (LTSB) to pay 1 day before due date, my Amex bill. checked on the recipient sort code (on LTSB website) to ensure amex accepted quick transfer- yes it was there. onsetting up payment, LTSB website confirms the money will be with the recipient within 1 working day, usually 2 hours.
next amex bill arrives - charge of £12 for late payment. money left LTSB on 3rd feb, but "disappeared" and arrived with Amex on 6th feb. LTSB say not our fault - your money left us as requested, denied their website was misleading. Amex say they cannot accept quick transfer, not in that scheme!

so essentially quick transfer doesn't work, they still have my several hundred pounds for 3 days.

  • Paying 1 day before it's due doesn't leave much room for error unfortunately.

    3rd February was a Friday.
Your payment was credited to your Amex account on the 6th February which was the next working day.
That timescale conforms to the payment services regulations.
Amex, on their website, advise you to pay 4 days before due date.

The PSR has opened a whole new can of worms - for those not used to fishing! I think some don't even realise you need to sit close to water.

Weekends and public holidays are not working days, so your money didn't 'disappear', it simply wasn't processed until the next working day. Therefore your payment was processed as stated.

If the 6th had been a bank holiday, it wouldn't have been processed until the 7th. 4 days in total, but only 1 working day.

So the due date was set as the 4th Feb - although not a 'working day' as far as AMEX are concerned. Curious, that. I understand that 'due' here doesn't mean it is always possible to be received on that date - because it is a final date rather than strictly the date you are meant to pay your account. But that would make it legally possible to set due dates in agreements that were never working days (say always the third Sunday in the month)

The indisputable fact is that AMEX 'had' this payment sitting in their current account on Friday 3rd Feb and have chosen not to apply it (say) retrospectively to 3rd Feb to the OPs 'credit'.

The OP should take a breath, call AMEX and ask for a goodwill wavier of this charge (which is often conceded) due to the circumstances: then try to avoid this known issue in future (like setting up a DD instead)
.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam
  • AMEX should waive fee if first time anyway as it was genuine error
It is annoying though nothing ever is processed on non working days lol :(
