Best place to sell gold watch?

Hello all,

Really not sure where i should be posting this, so sorry if its in the wrong place!

I have a ladies accurist 9ct gold watch that was bought in 1995 from a H Samual store (no idea on price) it is still in the box and didnt get worn much (if at all) so im looking at selling it, as its been in the loft for god knows how long!

Please can anyone give me advise on the best place to sell it? ive looked online at the 'cash for gold' ect websites but they seem to be for scrap / broken gold - i assume id maybe get more selling it as a watch rather than scrap gold?

ive never sold anything like this so have no idea!

many thanks
Holly

it might be worth scrap cost, but don't use "scrap for gold" or equivalent. you get a fraction of what things are worth. take it to a few proper jewelers/antique shop for a valuation and find out if they might be interested or can tell you somebody who might be.

I recently got £50 for a ladies Accurist 9ct gold wind up watch bought in the sixties. I just took it into a local antiques shop which was advertising 'highest prices paid for gold'. I don't really know if this was a fair price but it wasn't working and had been in a drawer for years so I was happy.

If you can get the model number off of the back, check it out on Ebay under completed listings, some of these watches seem to go for a lot :T

Personally I would just keep it or stick it on ebay after a good clean with some nice photos. I'm afraid you won't get that much for it, think 1/4 of the RRP maybe 1/3 if it's a very nice design and perfect condition.
Does it have a gold bracelet or just a gold bezzel? If it's the bracelet, does the bracelet feel quite heavy and solid or is the gold very thin so the pattern is only seen on the outside and it is "hollow" on the other side?
Most jewellers will only give you the scrap value of the watch plus maybe 10% so you will get more selling it yourself. I've worked in independent jewellers and watch specialists buying and selling new and 2nd hand watches and jewellery and the prices they pay for stuff suck as it's hard to sell!

Post this on the Up Your Income board as there have been various threads about selling watches/jewellery with good responses.

  • you should get in contact with the big online retailers such as watchfinder - they specialise in buying and selling 2nd hand watches (high-end i.e. omega, rolex)

Personally, I'd put it on eBay.

As a 1990's watch, it's not really vintage, and not one of the premium brands - I'm not sure if a specialist seller would consider it.

I'd rather someone bought it to use and get enjoyment from, rather than scrap it, so I probably wouldn't take it to a jeweller
