HELP! hsbc credit card late fee charge.

Hi, I had my recent credit card statement and HSBC had charged my a late fee for January 2012. I was only £12 but I feel I have been falsely charged. My statements ask for the minimum payment to be paid by the 30th of the month. On the 2nd January 2012 I paid £770 onto my credit card which was received by HSBC on the 3rd Jan. This payment showed on my December statement. My argument was that I had paid my credit card between the 30th Dec and 30th Jan like my statements showed, HSBC replied by saying "that the payment of £770 was paid before my Jan statement issue date (5th Jan) which therefore did not count as a January payment". Surely this isn't a "credible charge" as they call it. What action can I take to resolve this?

Many thanks

You are required to make a payment between the statement date and payment due date.
If you do not do so you will incur a late payment charge. HSBC are justified in applying the charge.
