Opening/closing meter discrepancy
I switched from npower to edf recently but received a pretty sizeable closing bill from npower. Asked them both to confirm readings - the elec ties up but the gas is 116 units different. Just wondering if this is worth chasing and whether it's my new supplier I take I

Depends on the units-metric or imperial meter?
The readings should be agreed between both suppliers before the final billing is produced. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Are you saying it is 116 different from the figure you provided but the closing and opening readings agree, or the opening and closing readings are 116 units different?
At what cost difference? To whose advantage?0 -
The way a Switch is supposed to work, is that you give the meter readings to the new supplier when they ask for them, and they pass the reading on to the old supplier who should produce a Final Bill based on that reading
Hopefully you kept a note of the reading you gave to the new supplier - you say you have checked this with them, was their reading the one you gave? If it doesn't match, Complain
If everything is OK with the new suppliers reading, something is wrong with n'powers - Take a look at the bill as sometimes believe it or not, Final Bills get issued on Estimated readings !
As macman has pointed out the cost of 116 Gas Units varies as to what sort of meter you have.
If yours is Metric 116 units would cost around £52, but if it is an Imperial meter 116 units cost around £146.00
Either way it is a substantial amount of money so when you have established who is at fault, WRITE to them heading the letter Complaint0 -
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a note of the readings I supplied edf, but they did tell me what readings I had supplied. When I phoned the previous supplier (Npower) to get their closing readings I pointed out the difference and they said edf hadn't raised a dispute over the meter readings (implying that they would/should if there was a discrepancy).
Weird thing is, I never received a final itemised bill from Npower, just a red letter saying they had requested this payment (which they hadn't) and that it would be getting passed onto bailiffs etc.
The meter is metric btw.something missing0 -
Hi cgray25 - I'm a bit puzzled as to how you know that n'powers Final Read is 116 units more than EDF's Start read, if you have only had a Final Demand and not the actual bill.
However, you must get a copy of that Final Bill from n'power - WRITE to n'power demanding a copy which they have to supply, listing the discrepancy in the Final Readings and heading the letter Complaint
With this letter on file, npower/debt collectors should cease demands for payment, and it opens the path to the Ombudsman if the problem isn't resolved after 8 weeks0 -
Hi dogs home,
I phoned both current and previous suppliers and asked them to confirm opening/closing readings. I paid the closing bill on receipt of the demand, but yes, I'll write a complaint letter to them.something missing0 -
EDF's start read should be the same as Npowers closing read as previous posters have stated your not supposed to pay twice for the same energy used. When edf agreed on a date to take over supply then they should have contacted you asking u to supply a read as at that date of supply changeover and that is the figure they are supposed to notify npower so that they can finalise your gas account with them. contact edf and speak to their change of supply team so see if they will dispute the read.0

Hi jock,
Yes, I understand that perfectly and I supplied them the meter readings on date of new supply (not sure if you read above, the discrepancy of 116 units is the problem, which I'll be taking up with them).something missing0
