Polo 6n 'R' Reg central locking issues

Hi All

I hope someone can help, as this is beginning to send me up the wall . . .

the central locking for my polo 6n suddenly stopped working the other morning, as far as I can remember there were no unusual circumstances leading up to the central locking failing.

I've carried out a few simple checks which have included:

  • Checking the fuse - which according to the Haynes manual is the same fuse that controls the stereo & cigarette lighter, both of which still work, therefore concluded the fuse is OK
  • Located the central locking pneumatic motor (which activates the locks) - which according to a few motor forums I've been reading commonly gets wet/is covered in water making it fail. My unit seems to be dry - therefore ruled that out
  • Used a multimeter to test the lead supplying the pneumatic motor, which reads negative power supply - now 1st thoughts is the relay supplying the motor has failed. PROBLEM - can't locate the relay supplying the motor to discount this option.
  • The drivers door lock doesn't not manually operate the lock or trigger the central motor to release the locks - therefore I have taken the door card off & the door lock/handle off, managed to manually lock/unlock the door with a flat head screwdriver but this still doesn't trigger the central locking.

My questions are -
  1. Can anyone tell me the location of the central locking relay? - so I can rule this out
  2. Should the supply cable to the pneumatic motor show a charge on the multimeter?
  3. Can anyone suggest any other reason(s) for the failure of the central locking?

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide, as this is truly winding me up now

  • Did you try locking/unlocking from the passenger side? If it works then it is probably the microswitch on the drivers unit that forms part of the motor. If it doesn't work then and you're getting a voltage to the motor then its the motor. In both cases the solution is to replace the motor.

The relay may be in the main fuse box.

Thanks for the reply Notmyrealname :)

Currently I'm having to use the passager door, as the only one that unlocks (however this doesn't trigger the central locking either!) meaning I manually unlock the passagers & have to unlock the drivers from inside.

The multi-meter didn't show power within the lead - which I'm assuming it should?

Which is why I thought it could be a relay - which I've tried all the relay's behind main fuse board under sterring colom, is there any where else I should look?

To add to it, after testing the relay's under the sterring colom I've blown the wiper relay, so had to order a new 1 :( while doing so asked main dealers if could locate the relay in question & got told they don't carry wiring maps, all they are shown is a picture of the relay itself!
