  • monday blues try not to worry what others think im like you i will be keeping sky we see that as our little monthly treat, we dont drink and rarely go out for a night out so sitting watching something on sky together is our little treat you need to have something if your entering into dmp cut everything out of your life and after a year or two im sure youll go mad!!! i like sky but ive never had virgin so cant say which ones better but just wanted to give you some support

Ilona your comment on tv making a child normal well unfortunately i work in schools and the children all discuss whats happening on clone wars or thundercats etc children that dont know about the programmes often left out of games as they play games based on the programmes during break im not saying tv is great for children but in the world we are living it is a part of childrens lives, just like computer games etc and to their peers the child that watches the programmes are normal and unfortunately the children that dont are classed as odd, its very sad but a reality.

  • We were paying about £62 a month for TV, BB and landline, I dropped down a package on tv and saved £7 only to be told new charges would make it go up again by £4. So.... we have ditched virgin tv and landline and only have broadband. We will now be paying £27.50. We sold some stuff and bought an aerial and as a result we now have all the channels we used to watch anyway and it won't cost us anymore.
We never used the phone, we use our mobiles. We pay £10.21 for those and get free BBM, 250 texts and 50 minutes, more than adequate for us.

Not everyone is the same and has the same needs but there are usually cheaper alternatives. People are just trying to help.:)

Thanks so much for your experience, can I ask a daft question: Can you have broadband without a landline? If so, we could maybe do without landline as have mobiles instead with free minutes???

Thanks Kitkat and Ilona, despite me saying I was getting flak, I genuinely do appreciate the comments, and perhaps need my eyes opened up to money saving a bit more. What I meant by my child being normal, is that I dont want to have to sacrifice to the point where my child is different to others, and not have memories, and to be honest we're not sat in front of the tv all the time, we do have other interests but it is part of our life, and we don't go out much and this will be our entertainment budget to a certain extent (much cheaper than a trip or two to cinema). However, perhaps I can compromise more on channels/multiroom, having already taken the movies and sports off. Thanks, if we're in this for the long haul, like kitkat, dont want to go all guns blazing at the start and then hate the plan...I want to tackle and repay my debt, but also dont want it to affect our moods/become depressed, or split us up, please dont laugh but these things can happen, already feel stressed by the situation and have been for a few years, now just want to get on with living and being happy...debt is horrible, and its horrible to be worrying about it 24/7...hopefully in the weeks/months to come it will get a bit easier.... if that makes sense x

Rent/mortgage first, food second, everything else is a luxury.

100% agree and it's a good mantra to have. I started mulling over starting up playing World of Warcraft again - £8 per month. Not breaking the bank, I'm still off the smokes (12 months now yippee!! :j) so 3 days of smoking = a month of playing a game....but it's still £8 a month that's not getting rid of the debt. So I probably won't bother.

Mondayblues - not saying you should cut everything out. But do you really need additional TV?? That's what costs. Freeview has over 50 channels. If you want a treat once a month to watch a Sky programme it would be cheaper to rent a DVD. Your child will still be able to watch TV and shows to discuss with their friends - they just won't be Sky1 shows!

You can get Broadband and phone for £20 with Virgin if you haggle. You can get Broadband, phone and TV for £33.90, and can get a £6 discount on that if you ask for it; I don't know why you're being quoted more unless you're asking for the fastest BB rate.

It's great that you're cutting your debt, but you *could* consider dropping the additional TV or getting a slower BB speed. I know the Virgin prices as I've just taken it myself!!!

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
  • You can get phone and broadband with Primus for £12.99 (12mth contract). I have this and it's great internet, fast etc. And I have a Freesat box (approx £70) to watch tv on.

Not criticising your choice, but for me I could never justify paying £40+ for extra channels!

Yes, they do standalone broadband, we have the 30mb which is £27.50 a month, they do a cheaper one at 10mb for about £22.50 and a larger one too I think.
Also when we had the aerial put in we had extensions done so the kids now have freeview in their rooms, before their tvs were just used for dvds and games. :)

We've never had Sky or Virgin so we didn't have your dilema but do your really need it? We have Freeview and it's got lots of chanels and we can usually find something to watch. Our box records so we save some programs for when there's nothing on. As for the children (we've got 3) and non of them has ever said they feel like they are loosing out. I don't know how old your child is but we get CBBC and CBeebies and the programmes that my older ones talk about ie TOWIE and Hollyoaks are on both on freeview channels. We sometimes rent DVD's from the Library for £1 or £2.
