OK. Thank you for your contribution - at least you have made one.

you've made the biggest contribution of all, you brought up a document that said this -

"Expressed as a percentage of the fund population, the proportion of funds with positive alphas is extremely low."

you managed to find a snippet of quote in the document that seemed to superficially suggest that active management worked. People will be thinking "if that's the strongest evidence an IFA can produce to support active fund management it must be a waste of time"

You know what, I'm going to thank you for that post.

So now you've hung your hat on the alpha side of the argument do you care to take the next step and help others understand what alpha really means in this context?

After all, someone of your abilities should know where I may be going with this and will be at least a couple of steps ahead of me.
I am an IFA (and boss o' t'swings idst)
You should note that this site doesn't check my status as an IFA, so you need to take my word for it. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Mortgage Adviser Code of Conduct. Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as financial advice.

Ah the typical male chauvinistic reply when he can't think of anything else. How quaint.

As to the answer - nope, wrong again.
    anyway stick with the UTs

  • well all i can say is that my thread has provoked the usual diatribe from the usual culprit when we all know my original premise is true - to be honest I stopped reading i after page 2 because it was all too predictable - solisten up everyone:

wise up and learn this stuff for yourselves - its not difficult.

Why would I ask you anything about derivatives? Given you said that UTs are managed funds I don't think anything that comes out of your mouth you actually know.

I would like to know what derivatives you actually trade though?
