Size of homemade invite - UPDATED with pics

After discovering the eBay seller of the invites we had chosen is no longer trading I have decided to make my own invites.
I'm doing them gatefold with a ribbon tied round the middle. The mock up I have done is a landscape A4 sheet of paper with the left and right edges folded in meeting in the middle (if that makes sense!)
I think it looks fab! (well, it will do when it's on proper card and has the finishing touches on it) and OH agrees. But, I have just spoke to my mum on the phone who (without seeing it) said "oh no, I think they'll be too big, you need to have an A5 sheet and fold that".
What's your opinion? Would A4 be too big? (it's the size of an A5 when it's folded) Or, should I use A5 so that it's the size of A6 when folded?
I know at the end of the day it's what we want that counts, I would like opinions please

I would do a mock up as A6 (when folded) and see what it looks like. See whether it is too crowded, whether the font is too small etc. I don't see a problem with A5 (when folded).
(Ours are A7 when folded

depends on how big your envelopes are and i would also advise if you are posting things to make sure they are smaller than the large letter - it will save you quite a bit on postageThe only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50

An A5 when folded (flat) would be covered by a normal stamp

You can buy square gatefold cards, which is what we had. Saved sooooooo much time and stress with not having to do the folding ourselves, and I was still able to print them at home.
They are 144x144mm, a5 is 210x148mm, so just slightly smaller than your A4 folded.First date 10.2.2002

I have received invitations in both sizes and am fine with both. I don't think they are necessarily too big. Personally I would go for a bit smaller than A5, but it is just that, a personal preference. I would do a mock version of the smaller one and see which you prefer. It will cost you half the price in card to do them half the size, but I suppose it's not a huge huge saving - matter of a few pounds, and you may think it's worth it, in which case, it is.0

Thank girls

I like the idea of the square ones, sounds like the middle ground! Thankfully time is on my side so I can afford to play about with them until I get it right! Been smoke free for 4 years!! :beer:0 -
Whatever you do, buy your envelopes first and make an invite to fit those, not the other way round. You don't want to make all your invites and not be able to get envelopes that fit them!
Good luck with it allWhat matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
We have gatefold invites to with the ribbon,A7 is the size we ordered and there fine0

sounds lovely a word on envelopes though have you thought how they will fit into whatever envelopes you use generally for A4 you'll need a C4 envelope and for A5 a C5 envelope:kisses3: Married 29th September 2012

Smaller and understated usually comes across as classierYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0
