laptop fans

hi
sorry for what maybe a silly question but can someone tell me how noisey laptops should be?
i have a sony that i can hear th fan on its not really loud but i can hear it most of the time. thing is i dont really know how much you should hear and know im a bit paranoid due to be old sony one needed a new one. that was a horrendous noise.
i was using you tube earlier and it sounded like it was working hard. it doesnt feel particualary hot and i keep it on a pine box rather than on my actual lap. thankyou

    What model, how old?

The old single core CPus did run very hot, so fans had to work harder. Secondly old machines will become dust impregnated, again the fan has to work harder,

Had a case some recently where the copper cooling fins were covered in a dust blanket.

Homes with pets are alwys more likely to suffer.

You could buy a can of compressed air and try to blow out dust collection?

Compressed air is only of use if you take the covers off the laptop, otherwise you risk blowing more dust inside than you'll get out. Holding a vacuum clearer nozzle over any vents will get the worst of it out. using a small paintbrush if necessary to loosen the dust
