Hi, this may be a waste of time...having a look at an old COMPAQ Presario 2500 (2.4Ghz P4). It has 256MB memory (192MB available) and 10GB disk space left. Its only XP SP2. Its very slow.

still some stuff you can do with that...but you really need to go tp SP3 and windows up to date before you start...
1. go into BIOS and reduce the video RAM down to a minimum - on a system that old, you may be able to reduce it to 8MB, but will depend on the ATI graphics if it'll let you go that low.
2. you shouldn't need the things highlighted in red running, disable with msconfig > startup tab, or CCLeaner's Tools > startup. If they're still there in HJT after disabling them (you'll have to run another HJT scan & log, then they casn be fixed in HJT.

3. look at blackviper's site, you can trim down Services far more following his advice.
http://www.blackviper.com/2008/05/19/black-vipers-windows-xp-x86-32-bit-service-pack-3-service-configurations/
Go for the Tweaked setup
I can get XP down to around 130Meg Commit charge, and running on 256MB. 512 Meg is a breeze
p.s. depending on what RAM it takes, I may have a spare 256MB very cheap
pps I've recently accquired a dell optiplex small form factor running a 2.4GHz P4 with 512 in it, use it as a media streamer permanently into the tv, it's plenty fast enough for that......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
reinstalling windows is the ultimate cure.!!

reinstalling windows is the ultimate cure.
not really....a "vanilla" install of windows and SP3 and beyond will still need some tweaking down to run ok on 256 meg.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
