Car insurance while selling car

Hello folks, just after some advice.

I'm about to sell my Clio whose insurance runs out on feb 24th and buy my parents Astra as of Mon 21st Feb. My question is (bareing in mind I've never sold privately before): If I haven't sold the clio after feb 24th what do I do insurance-wise so it can be taken out on test drives etc?
I thought about getting new insurance on the clio and then when it's sold, just ask the ins company to add on for the Astra, however it's likely they'll bump the price up massively.

Any thoughts forumites?

Many thanks

  • Your insurance company may offer a short term changeover insuring both cars. Remember to make sure that the person test driving it has insurance cover of their own - just because they have fully comp doesn't automatically mean they can drive other vehicles. If you get stopped on a test drive and it turns out they're uninsured then you'll be done as well for allowing the vehicle to be driven by an uninsured driver.

Essjaybee. The big issue is continous insurance. If the car is taxed it has to be insured. If the insurance lapses (on either car) then technically it needs to be declared sorn and can't be driven on the road.

Trying to arrange temp cover for both cars will work round this but could be pricey. For some reason since this change came in the price of temp cover has rocketed. Can't think why....

Only assuming you have not taken reasonable steps to ensure they are covered.

If you have stated (Preferably in writing and both signed) that it is a condition of the test drive that the buyer has suitable cover in place for the vehicle then a conviction is unlikely

I wont let anyone drive my car whilst Im sellling it, they have to come on a test drive with me driving it, if they dont like it then tough.

Even if their FC insurance covers them to drive other cars it will only be third party and they could wreck my car and walk away.....

I wouldn't buy a car without driving it.

I generally make sure their cash stays with my mrs while they drive the car. They do it on the understanding that "you bend it you bought it"

    works well.

  • Thanks for all the comments guys - very helpful :)

I'll ring my insurer in the morning and discuss my options. Have someone coming to look at the clio over the weekend so hopefully it won't be an issue.

    Thanks again!
