Feline struvite crystals

Hi. My beloved kitty is about 15 years old and was diagnosed with struvite crystals several years ago. Since then he's been on the Royal Canin Urinary prescription diet (he has wet and dry). The problem is it's so expensive and I'm really struggling to afford it.
On the packaging it says to use for 6 months, but everytime I ask my vet about it he advocates using it for the rest of his life.
I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences of feline struvite crystals and could offer me some advice please. (I have stopped buying it from my vet and get it on-line from the cheapest place I can find). Thanx.

My cat also has this and is on the same food probably, Royal canin urinary s/o though he only gets the dry food.
As far as I am aware from my vet this is a 'rest of life' diet as otherwise there could be flare ups and I don't want him in distress or it potentially getting worse.
I know how it is struggling to afford the food but doesn't seem there's much choice and I'd happily live off baked beans to afford it for my little guy

I feel your pain...
We have a cat with the same problem. He is on the Hills S/D tinned stuff for life and it costs a fortune.
We've tried all the others, a raw diet, and the Hills dry version, but he's ended up in kitty hospital with a blocked penis twice now so we just have to grin and bear it. He's been on the S/D for about a year uninterrupted now and we've had no further problems.
We find vetuk or petplanet usually the cheapest.0
