Mike I've had my new unit prices through the post today and thought you might find them useful. Rather confusingly these prices are including VAT so the decrease is more than it seems at first.

    Normal primary units 23.657p each
    Normal secondary units 12.453p each
    Boost units 15.593p each
    Afternoon units 6.941p each
    Night/ Evening units 6.941p each
    Standing Charge 10.952p per day
Comparing the rates shows a 7.42% reduction in prices, well done e.on

I will wait for my mother-in-law's letter before chearing too loudly.

  • Hi Malc.
I am an Eon customer. I have one meter which incorporates heatwise. I have 2 consumer units. 1 feeds all circuits excluding3 storage heaters and an immersion heater which heatwise powers via the other consumer unit.
I intend to revert back to a E7 meter which I was on about 20 years ago till E. Midlands Electric updated me to Heatwise.
Would switching back to a E7 meter be straightforward or would any cable rerouting be required? If the latter is needed would Eon do this when they change the meter?
    Thanks Jacko.

    Hi Jacko,

Not sure Malc or anyone at Eon will be able to say exactly what you will need as each house will be wired differently. (i.e. the house side of the meter). It all depends on what the boxes which you call "consumer units" are. Any electrician should be able to look at what you have and tell you exactly what you need.

In your shoes I would get an electrician to quote for the job. Calculate the savings, to see if it is worth while doing in the medium or long term. Then if it is cost effective agree with Eon and electrician dates for the work to be done. (I am told that a swap to a standard E7 meter costs £70).

Please also remember that you will no longer be getting the afternoon top up on the heating circuit, so you have to make the overnight top up last all day.

    Hi Jacko

Malc's not here today but I think he may have answered your query already on this post.

MikeWill34 is right, best bet is to get an electrician in to check everything out and then come back to us about changing the meter.

Hope you get it sorted :)

    Amanda

It's also possible to replace the meter with a more conventional single rate or Economy 7 type. This will open up a range of different tariffs, both with us and the other suppliers.

However, as I mentioned above, the meter will be wired directly into the heating/water heating circuits and removing it may have implications for these services.

For this reason, I always advise customers contemplating removing Heatwise meters to have an independent approved electrician check over the set up first.

It may also be necessary to carry out some remedial electrical work to make sure there are no problems with the heating once the Heatwise meter has been removed.

The cost of the electrician would be down to the customer. We are also currently charging £51.06 to change a meter.

Hi everyone, iv just moved to a prepay meter from a heatwise meter from eon due to the fact it was costing so much and my bills just kept getting bigger and bigger. after 6 years our debt with eon crept up and we took the decision that we have tried to avoid as we live out in the sticks and said we would like a prepay meter installing. now bare in mind this is summer and we have had a great one up to yet so there has been no crappy rip off storage heaters on only the immersion heater but before the install they got our readings and I asked how much is it costing us at the moment each week and they said almost £40! once again as iv complained so many times over the 6 years with eon I said are you sure that is right we only live in a small 2 bed house, we don't drink tea or coffee so the kettle is never on and we have a dish washer for the pots that I only put on when its full. They said yes this is what you are using. well yesterday I had my new prepay meter installed, they said it was costing me around £5.71 per day with my heatwise meter well to my shock today while monitoring my prepay meter for the first time with everything on in the house as usual a part from the washing machine has been on all day and iv turned the boiler on for 1 hr we have used only £1.35!!!! that is a big difference to say prepay meter are suppose to be more plus I have a debt that is added on it everyday to pay it off. It looks like we have been getting ripped off big time by eon for 6 years costing us £1000's in extra costs that we should not have had to pay!!!
  • Hi WoZZeR

What type of prepayment meter has replaced the old Heatwise meter? Is it a single rate or a multi-rate type? If multi rate, how many registers does it have?

The Heatwise meter will have had 4 or 5 registers. Three of these would have recorded usage for heating/water heating purposes through dedicated circuits.

If the new prepayment meter is a standard type then you may not be comparing like with like.

Best thing is to keep a check on your meter readings. See how they compare with past usage through the Heatwise meter. You may, though, need to add the different Heatwise registers together to do an accurate comparison. Again, this will depend on the type of prepayment meter you have.

On the Heatwise meter, were bills based on accurate readings? If they were, it looks as though you've used the electricity at the time of billing. However, if estimates were involved, you could have had catch up bills. This can give a false impression of usage at any one time.

As I say, best to concentrate on meter readings. Build up a picture of your usage.

Another thing to consider is the tariff. Heatwise meters only have the one tariff. However, if your new prepayment meter is of the standard variety, there'll be options available with other suppliers that may not have been there before.

Sorry for all the questions but not totally sure of the situation. Sorry, also, if I've the wrong end of the stick.
