BBC and their brainless repeats policy

I suspect the reason for repeats in the same week is probably down to the costs and deals involved.
IIRC a lot of broadcasters including the BBC get the rights to repeat a series/film X times in Y timescale, and from memory these days the repeat in the first week is often free (and in the BBC's case usually at least one of the repeats is likely to be a signed version thus not a 100% repeat, as it's effectively a different language version*), so it's a cheap way to fill the schedule with something that hasn't likely been seen by most viewers before,

Ratings will be taken into account, but I suspect the different versions/viewer convenience, and cost are at least as high in priority.

*And the BBC are from memory meant to do a percentage of their content in signed format, in much the same way they used to have to do a percentage in subtitled, but unlike subs there is no system to broadcast a signs as an on/off system (basically at the moment the only way is as another TV channel, be it hidden behind something like the red button). Apparently there has been a fairly major effort to get a workable sign language version of subtitles but it's still too complex to do at a reasonable cost.

Thanks to rwgraw and Nilrem. It's always a little less annoying if you know there's some reason for these things.
