As the title says. I have done searches, but can only find information that is over a year out of date.
Does anyone know if they still do this, or is it on a Uni by Uni basis?
TIA

Pretty sure that stopped a while ago.0

Are you referring to a grant due to being the first? - your post isn't clear.
If it is a grant you're referring to then it's possible individual universities give grants for this. I know I got one when I was 18 for being the first in my family to attend university but there was other criteria I had to meet.0 -
I dont know if its a grant. As my daughter is the first to go to Uni, I have never had to deal with Student Finance before!Married the absolute love of my life on Sunday May 6th and I couldnt be happier!!!0

Not familiar to me, and I fall into the category.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
They don't do this anymore.
Tell her to look on the Uni's websites that she's applied to.
They have info regarding grants etc on there, but all the institutions I've looked at have never offered this. Plus the system has completely changed now, so I doubt they'd do this still.SAVINGS: £63.86 // £3,0000 -
Am I the only person who still doesn't understand the question?0

Some people thought that if you were the first child to go to University, you would get a grant from Student Finance. This actually isn't the case - it would have been the Universities who did these bursaries. The OP just wanted to know whether these are still in existence and how they'd go about getting such a bursary.
I am the first person in my entire family to go University, and these grants / bursaries didn't exist, and that was at my first Uni in 2009. Uni I'm at now don't offer them either. In face, in my research in to Uni's I don't know of ANY University that do these grants / bursaries now, especially with the new finance and fee system which is coming in to place in September.SAVINGS: £63.86 // £3,0000 -
Oxbridge do some summer schools which aim to attract students who are the first in their family to go to uni but I don't know if they offer financial support when you start.
Generally more people than ever are the first in their family to go to uni so they don't offer grants anymore they simply ask you if you are to collate data so they can see what background university applicants are from (because there is a big thing about social inclusion).0 -
They ask this question on the UCAS application form. The idea is that the universities can choose to look kindly on applications from first in family applicants, this can mean a slightly lower offer, more effort in contacting the applicant to visit the uni, possibly looking kindly on an applicant who doesn't quite make the offer grades etc. it can also mean bursaries for the individual universities.
It must make some difference as my son's school advised first in families to make sure they tick that box and all others to tick the 'prefer not to say' box.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
