Townhouse - What do you think

  • I'm not keen on townhouses either - unless they are period ones - but then I don't like newer houses at all, but that's personal taste and may suit your lifestyle perfectly OP.

What would put me off is a) the proximity of the pub and b) the new builds behind overlooking the property.

When we bought last year we were looking for a period village property and found a lovely large grade 2 house in an attractive village with large rear garden......but - it was next door to a gastro pub and on our second viewing (and after we had an offer accepted), we discovered plans to build two houses overlooking the rear garden in the pub car park. We wasted no time in pulling out for whilst we were prepared to tolerate the pub, we didn't fancy a building site behind our garden for several months only to have it replaced by two houses towering over our previously unoverlooked garden :( Almost a year later the new builds are still not finished and the house remains unsold, having dropped considerably in price in the intervening months.

You have to weigh up if the plus points to you (proximity of station etc) are overshadowed by the negatives and make your decision accordingly........

  • Thanks all for the great advice, the house is actually a town house built in the mid 80s and lots of points you raise makes me have mixed feelings!
  • Agree with most of the other posters. Can't stand townhouses personally (at least, the ones with garage/cloakroom/one tiny room on the ground floor).
And the other negatives would certainly rule this out as a purchase for me. Reselling in the future could be problematic too.
(Double glazing is fine, up to a point, but you will want to have windows open when the weather warms up.)
As you sound very unsure, I would say "don't"!
  • Townhouses are just a matter of taste and preference - taking it to mean a property on 3 floors. We have one that suits us just great and the extra stairs are good for my waistline, but I'm not sure would suit a family with young children as two bedrooms are on ground floor, and other bedroom on 2nd floor, so there's quite a gap between you at night. Ideal if you have teenagers though!

The real problem with your property is the location re the railway/pub garden/possible development- does the price factor that in and is it worth it for the bargain to you, no one else can say if it is or not.

  • I have been looking for a property for a while and have looked at a few Townhouses..

The problem I find is that the Garden is too small and there is rarely parking out the front. OK many have integral garages but that reduces the amount of rooms on the ground floor so you often then have the kitchen on the first floor... not for me!!
