We will be getting a surveyor to look at this but can anyone advise until I can arrange it;
just today noticed a crack under the bay window that goes right through the bricks - each brick has a vertical crack down it

- No history of subsidence locally
- Tree with large roots was removed about 50 years ago but one large root did point in this direction
- No crack visible inside house
- Solid 1930s brick built house with non-cavity walls
- No crack visible above bay
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

Sound like your downstairs bay and not between bays . If its split your bricks somethings moved .If its followed your mortar its still moved but differently . Difficult to say but your getting a survey anyway . I would go for a free estimate first from a reccommended builder then you will learn more about what it is and how much to fix it . A suveryor will charge you more then you need to think about getting it fixed .:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

First suggestion. Check to see if any surface water drainage around or in area of bay is leaking (plumber ?). Are you on a sandy soil ?You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

Just be careful who you pick. Many Surveyors will not comment on structural movement and will just look at it and then recommend that a report is obtained from a structural engineer
So, either ask for a report from a structural engineer in th efirst place, or if instructing a building surveyor, ask him if he is either competent or prepared to comment on structural matters
In the meantime, all buildings move and cracking is common without it being a problem. In this location, any cracking is not a major issue and you can monitor cracking for yourself for a while to see if it progresses. It's only a concern once you can start getting your fingers into it and if it appears internally too, and any survey may well recommend a period of monitoring in any case ... only you will pay someone to do that monitoring0 -
Could be just a stress/pressure crack."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
