Possible charge by Santander for bereavement account handling?

Hello there,

Apologies if this question has been asked before.
I had a quick search through the forum, using the search tool and also Google but didn't find anything specific to my query.

My mother recently passed away and my father has been trying to sort out some financial details, like changing their joint account over to his name.
He visited a branch of Santander today and if I heard him correctly on the phone this evening, he suggested that they want to charge him £25 for making this change.

Now I had a look on their web site and couldn't find this specific charge but did notice what appears to be a standard fee of £25 for other matters.

Has anyone had a similar experience?
Does he really have to pay £25 and what's that actually paying for?

Many thanks in advance,

Jason

When we changed joint accounts to my mum's name after my dad died no bank or building society charged anything. There's nothing I could see in a brief glance through the bereavement guide linked to from the page xylophone refers to that says Santander will make any charge. But there are a couple of mentions of instances where small charges could be made by solicitors for authorised paperwork (e.g. on page 20), could it be that you did in fact mishear and your father was actually talking about those charges?

I briefly spoke with him tonight and he was angry and upset, so it's possible I/we misunderstood about the £25 that was mentioned.
I guess I wanted other peoples advice in advance.

Thanks for the replies so far, they've been great.

If they do charge it would be very insensitive of them. Oh, wait, it's Santander!

I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope you get this sorted out.
