Insurance claim - kitchen

Hi

I use this site often for various ideas etc but am sad that I am my first post is this one.

I need some help please

I have insurance cover which includes accidental damage and have recently had a flood in the kitchen. The flood has damaged a solid wooden floor, an oven and the bottom units in the kitchen.

The insurers have sent loss adjusters out to evaluate the floor and oven claim and (at the moment) appear to be close to settling this element.

My problems is as follows.....

The insurers will only replace the part of the kitchen that is damaged. Despite going to numerous shops I am unable to find the same cupboards which means

A) live with a damaged kitchen that matches
B) have a mismatched kitchen
C) buy a completely new kitchen at my expense (less the insurers contribution for the bottom cupboards)

I find this astounding as I cannot afford a new kitchen and don't feel it's right to live with option A or B

Has anyone come across this before and if so shad anyone got any advice

Thanks

I believe that some insurers will contribute 50% towards replacing kitchen units which aren't damaged.

Most will as that's how the FOS have ruled in the past - across several insurance companies I have worked at in the past, I've only ever known them to do it when pushed (down the complaints route), as even at 50% it can end up costing thousands.

Beyond that, there's not much more you can do, but next time you renew your policy, pay the extra for a policy covering matching items.
  • There is a clause in home insurance regarding matching pairs/ sets. Lower end policies exclude it and upper end policies include it.

I have never understood why but the FOS typically will make the insurer contribute 50% to the undamaged part if you have gone for the budget/ standard cover. Most insurers do it fairly quickly others will require you to fight to get them to agree to it.

If you want cover in the future ensure that you have a matched item clause to avoid the issue but expect to pay more for the cover (claims are much higher for the insurer as a single broken floor tile could result in them paying for a half a floor having to be retiled
