Estate agent refusing to allow me to view a property?

Unless I agree to see their mortage advisor! Is this even legal? If I was the seller I'd be livid!

The property has been on the market for about 10 months. It's perfect for me but the estate agent is refusing to let me see it. I do not want a mortage from these cowboys.

How do I get round this nonsense? Seriously considering putting a note through the door of the house with my phone number and bypassing the idiot agent...

Pretty sure they are doing the illegal thing, so I'd slip a note as you've suggested, if I were that seller, I'd be seriously peed off!

Do you have a decision in principle from your mortgage company?

Could you show them this and advise them that you have a mortgage offer in place, this would convince them that you are a serious buyer.

When it comes down to it, the EA works for the seller and it would seem reasonable that the seller doesn't want any timewasters or people who have no intention or ability to buy the property looking at it.

    Good luck!

I contacted the estate agent three weeks ago. Could've had an offer in by now!

Is there some kind of estate agent regulator I can report them to?

No, I want to report them/kick their behinds. They are working for the selller - to sell the house, no alienate potential buyers.

do what you said, call in and bypass agent.

better with a decent mortgage offer in place though, for obvious reasons !

Your approach feels a little shortsighted to me, they could continue to block you and if, eventually, you do get to see the property whats to say they wouldn't say things to the seller along the lines of "in my professional experience I wouldn't advise going with buyer Amber because of A,B or C. I think that this alternative Buyer is a better option for the sale actually completing due to yadda, yadda, yadda "

Obviously not entirely above board but how are you going to know? All you will know is that your offer is rejected.

Playing by the rules does sometimes get you where you want to go in the quickest way possible.

Hope you get to see the property and that you like it!

I have the mortgage end sorted. I did that prior to even starting to look, I have a substantial deposit too. I think I will actually stick a note under the door.

If anybody wants to know of an estate agent not to use to sell your house in the north east - pm me!

None of this makes any sense - estate agents are supposed to be essentially salesmen. Why reject a potential sale?

You should only play by the rules if you think the rules are moral and right. And in this case they are not.

I wouldn't advocate saying you will bypass the estate agent in those words, you would be better off popping a note through the vendor's door advising them that you are very keen but the EA is forcing you to see their MA, and you do not wish to. State your case subtly, the EA will not even need to know.

Occasionally a desperate EA will only forward an offer if you see their MA.. It is very strange in this market to be turning people away like this. Name and shame them please! I bet it's Your Move.
