Insurance for when your house needs building repairs

I am paying well over the odds for my building and contents insurance but I face a dilemma. A few months ago a crack was discover in one of the inner walls of my house. Made a claim but was refused as it was not 'subsidence/heave etc'. Had a survey which revealed that the crack was about 10 years old and that I could wait a year or so (or even longer) before I dealt with it. Decided to do that to give me a chance to save up the quoted £3000 bill! Most insurers ask that you declare if your house is not in a good state of repair. If i try to switch insurers then I am supposed to declare this problem. but then they will probably not insure me? Or I will have to pay over the odds. I also should declare to my current insurers on renewal but I figure that they already know seeing as I made a claim with them and it shoudl be on their records. What should I do, carry on paying well over the odds for my insurance and try switching only in a years time when i can afford to get repairs done, or just not mention it when i try to switch, after all, 'good state of repair' is a subjective thing? I'm soooooooo stuck!
