If you like having to wait 90 minutes for system updates every time you turn it on, then definitely buy a PS3.

Otherwise get an XBOX 360.

I mainly use mine as a bluray player also. If you are planning on playing games then I'm not the person to ask.

You can use lovefilm on the xbox as i used it the other week to watch inbetweeners.

For games id sya the xbox but I have 1. Both consoles have they're good and bad points with regards to gaming.

I've got both, I play playstation more but that's all down to my friends have them. To be honest PS3 is the best one of the two with no subscription for on-line gaming and all the features and more then the xbox.

To be honest, it's personal preference and what you tend to use it most for. I have a PS3, watch Blu-rays and dvds on it, stream tv and watch Lovefilm. I like that you don't have to pay for the online subscription on the PS3 but I have the online 'Playstation Plus' subscription which gives you free games every month and automatically runs the updates for you. If you use it more for gaming then check if there are any exclusives that you really want and if you're wanting to do online gaming with friends that obviously that would depend on what they had as well.

For cheapness, Go with the playstation.
However for a better console experience, go with the xbox, always prefered it even with the cost of xbox live.
It depends on if your concern is the cost or the quality of the console.

Oh and also security, anyone besides me remember the large playstation hack with thousands having their debit/credit card details stolen
