  • I'd go for the PS3 personally but that's just me, i've owned both machines but never got on with the 360. I use mine as a Blu-Ray player mostly, i occasionally stream movies from my laptop to the TV via the PS3 too but have never used it to stream anything from the interweb. I've also never bothered with online gaming so can't comment on that.

Sony may be releasing the PS4 towards the end of 2012, their consoles generally have a 6yr shelf-life (the original PSX was launched in 1994, the PS2 came out in 2000 and the PS3 was released in 2006) so it might be wise to hold-fire if you can/want to because prices will fall through the floor once the PS4 hits the shelves. There's no sign of the 360 replacement but i've read a story suggesting anywhere between 2013 and 2016, it might therefore be wise to go with the 360 as you can be (fairly) certain that you won't be buying something that'll soon be replaced by something altogether better.

The following guide might also help you decide though actual user advice might be better as personal experience may differ.

Well to watch 4od, 5 on demand and lovefilm/netflix you need an xbox subscription but as you dont pay for a subscription to access the xbox live equivalent i believe you can use iplayer etc fro free on ps3.

Yes the catch up services are free on the PS3. Also you cant use Lovefilm on the Xbox at moment but can on the PS3.

I mainly use mine as a bluray player also. If you are planning on playing games then I'm not the person to ask.

ps3 ....I have`nt had any problems with the "free" online gaming(apart from the hack but that could happen to any of them) that so many xboxers claim it has.streaming is also good .

I currently own both consoles, and I'd recommend the PS3. (With the Blu Ray Remote!)

My current PS3 I managed to get at Sainsburys. It was £200 for the PS3 Slim 160GB and two games... at the time I bought it with two copies of Fifa '12 - sold them on Gumtree (No interest in footie, understood the demand for the game) at £30 each making the console £140. I then bought up 3 or 4 games on a Facebook group saving a fortune. Sainsburys asked me why two of the same game, I told them I'd give a copy to a friend so we could both play.
  • Some good offer at Morrisons on consoles lately as well though would also recommend searching around on HotUKDeals as well.

My sons have both consoles, but seem to use the Xbox most of all. I think for gaming, they seem to prefer the games on there, such as COD, Skyrim etc. There are also plenty of Xbox pre-owned games at good prices, often in multi buy deals in shops like Game. They use the Xbox Live online membership to have gaming online with friends. They also seem impressed with the recent upgrade to Xbox services too. They use their's for watching DVD's too. BluRay isn't something we're bothered with, so was never anything we had to consider.

I think you have to consider what kind of use you will need the console for, and have a look at the games available on each console before you decide.

    I suggest you lo

  • As both machines are pretty evenly matched (although a few people I know who have both, all prefer the Xbox), unless there are certain games exclusive to a particular platform that you want I would decide based upon going to a shop and holding both control pads to see which you prefer. I find the Xbox controller much better than the PS3's, which personally I find quite awkward to use.

I very much doubt we'll see a PS4 until well into 2013 at the earliest. Same for the next Xbox.
