    Lucky you.:beer::beer:

I was too chicken to try it yesterday as the shop was too busy.:( If I'd have known I could have converted the WHSmith cards to iTunes I'd have been a bit more tempted.

I've sent you another pm :D
Couldn't think of anything witty to say so just keeping the space until I can :(

  • I've never understood why people buy buy fondue sets and other gimmicky things like popcorn makers, chocolate fountains, candy floss makers etc etc only to be used a few times before ending up in the back of the cupboard for a few years before ending up on a carboot stall.:rotfl:

I have a popcorn maker - need it after I burnt so many saucepans & tupperware dishes making popcorn.:rotfl::rotfl:
    We use it regularly:j:j:j
I say "THANKS" to posts that make me smile - Oh and really good glitches.:j

    Good afternoon 11+ers:D

Exchanged my WHS gift cards for a mixture of Argos, M&S, Homebase, itunes and New Look. Also bought printer ink which was buy 1 get 1 half price and managed to use a £5 off £20 spend at the same time :j
I had no problems but they did confirm the glitch still works but only by using cash each time, not a gift card to buy the next gift card. Its still a good deal if anyone has enough spare cash though.:A

sorry, i missed this whs glitch, what was it?

No problem using both SSM vouchers against Stain remover and Dishwasher tablets HE shampoo now £1.66 so I can cope with 66p a bottle , a few more toothpaste and free washing up liquid.

Had a £5 off £40 along with the magazine vouchers so came away happy.

  • Well, you've got two options....

    1. Buy Microsoft Works for Mac. Having never done this I can't say for sure whether simply copying everything across is all that needs to be done. The apple store guys should keep you right on this. But I can't see why just copying everything across wouldn't work. Personally, I wouldn't install any Microsoft software on my Mac as I've heard stories about it seriously slowing Macs. This was confirmed when I made the mistake of installing MSN Messenger, even after removing it my Mac still wasn't right.:(

    2. Open the documents on your Windows laptop and (not quite sure how you would do this, if at all Windows would let you, but again, I can't see why not) either select 'Save As..' and select the Mac file option. When I save things on my Mac to be used on Windows I can't do the 'Save as..' option. I have to export it to a Windows format. So if you can't 'Save As..' look for an 'Export' option somewhere. The apple software Pages (Word) and Numbers (Spreadsheets) are reasonably priced and unlike Windows the applications can be bought individually saving a substantial amount of money.

When you go to look at the laptop make sure the screen and keys dim and brighten when the buttons are pressed, check for any signs it's been dropped (dents) and take a few CD's/DVD's with you and make sure that the Superdrive works. It's all over the net that these are faulty but Apple aren't recognising the problem. In fact, just about everything I've gone to the apple store about I get "oh, never heard of that before" almost as if they have been brainwashed in to denying everything so as not to admit any liability. I fixed mine and Westies Superdrive by taking it out, opening it up and blowing in it. The laser had also jammed, probably through lack of use so giving it a gentle push with a wee screwdriver sorted that. So it's not a big deal if it doesn't work, just bear in mind that my fix might not fix it if it has other problems.

Oh and make sure that BOTH the original CD's come with the laptop as you will need them at some point or another and they are unique to the machine, or at least the Mac OS disc is.

Thats great info - going to print it off and take it with me at weekend when i go and look at it. If it doesn't have the discs is it a no go then? or can these be purchased elsewhere? also is there any way to find out if its "hot" as i don't want to buy if it is - as much as i would like a mac book don't want it at the detriment of someone else, thanks xxx

I've added a bit to my post and I've got a bit more...

If the Mac is running Lion but it didn't come direct from Apple with Lion pre installed then that's going to be a wee bit of a problem. Lion is a download from the Mac app store to upgrade Snow Leopard. To use the Mac app store you need an iTunes account. You might find (but don't quote me on this) that when you go to download any updates for Lion it will ask you for the persons iTunes password that was used to purchase Lion. It's not a problem to sign out of the sellers iTunes account and sign in with your own. When you go to update the update might work no problem, or iTunes might charge you £20.99 (the cost of Lion) This is where the CD's come in, you can reinstall Snow Leopard and then purchase your own copy of Lion that way everything is correct.

I wouldn't say it was a no go if the discs aren't there. There are 3 sizes of MacBook Pro (13, 15 and 17 inch). The Mac OS Discs are screen size specific so it's not just a case of borrowing the CD from your mate down the road who has 13 or 17" model. When I reinstalled Snow Leopard my Mac never asked me for a product key leading me to think that the discs might also be machine specific in another way. Apple will keep you right on this though and if need be, can sell you the discs at a cost. Lion is download only, Mountain Lion is due out in the summer as a download only so it will only be a matter of time before Snow Leopard discs become discontinued then ultimately, Snow Leopard becoming unsupported by apple. If you need the discs, get them sooner rather than later.

As for telling whether it's hot, if the owner has reported it to the police/apple as lost stolen and has given the serial number (apple can also track this back to when it was purchased so even if the machine is gone the owner can still get it from Apple to give to the police. Get the serial number (should be etched on the bottom of the machine) take it to the police and call/go to apple and explain why, if it's been reported lost/stolen with them then they will tell you. If you buy it and take it to apple and they discover it's stolen then they will take it off you. Also you need to get the seller to write you a receipt confirming you bought it from him and he is transferring ownership to you, make sure he puts the serial numbers in the letter so you have proof of ownership to show apple if you ever have to take it in for a repair.

sorry, i missed this whs glitch, what was it?

It was a glitch at WH Smith. Buy a greetings card and get a £15 WH Smith gift card for £10. Use that gift card to buy the next greetings card and gift card and build up a stck of gift cards. We were at it all day yesterday until they changed the system.

Now you can still do it but you can't use the gift card to buy the next one so you would need to lay out cash.
