I have managed to get DS2's new room framed out and plasterboarded - now I need to do the ames taping PDQ so that the carpenter can pop back to do the skirting / architraves.
Can someone recommend a brand of tape / compound that I should ask for?
I shall be doing this myself - but have also go 1000gsm lining paper for over the top should my finish not be perfect.
Many thanks
MG

Based on personal preference, I'd go with easi fil for the jointing. I prefer it as it has a reasonable length working time as well as being very eay to sad down. This means that even if it were to go spectularly wrong you can do a lot of repair work with sand paper and a light skim, no need for lining paper (which is a bonus as its probably harder to get right than tape and joint). As far as tape choices, you have got either the fibreglass scrim or the paper tape, bot have merits. If you are using tapered board and you don't have any butt joints scrim is your way forward. If you do have but joints then the paper tape is your friend. Its not self adhesive so you have to put a thin skim of filler on the wall prior to applying the tape but accoring to the defects avoidance people you get less cracking when using paper tape on thin joints.

There are actually some quite good videos on youtube which will give basic instructions for dry lining and its always good to see it being done in front of you.
All in all, its a very achievable project and also one of the most rewarding when its complete.

Thanks guys - checked out "Tommy" on youtube and I think this is something that I can crack on with myself. Actually looks much less complicated than icing a cake.
Mostly butt edges - the room is all funny angles so I shall go in seach of paper tape and easy fil tomorrow. I have promised the lasses on the DFW board that I will post photo's - so wish me luck LOL

if you can't find it at builders merchant , then do it all http://www.diy.com/nav/build/building-materials/materials/plastering___plasterboard/-specificproducttype-plaster_accessories/Gyproc-Easi-Fill-45-10kg-9273267do it
plus they do the jointing paper as well0 -
As said easi-fill will be easier for a novice.ames is the top coat that is used after the joint is taped and filled with joint filler0
