Unrecognised Transaction

I checked my statement this morning and there's a transaction for £333.39 and the details were BRITISH A 1252486609 LONDON GB. I wasn't in London and I don't remember spending this amount. It put me over my limit and I paid enough in to bring the amount within my limit but I've called to have the card blocked. What happens now? The person I spoke to said I need to speak to customer service and they aren't open yet. Luckily I have a low limit on my card - I only have it to rebuild my credit rating and I don't want to have a bad mark on it due to going over. Hopefully I'm not going to be liable for this.

The card is Vanquis if that makes any difference.

I just called them. They'd asked if I'd been abroad as there was a conversion figure on it. It would seem it's originated in Europe. They're sending me a declaration form and then they'll start an investigation. The card is blocked and they're sending me a new card and PIN. It's panicked me because I've been so careful - always paying the card off or paying most of it, never going over my limit or anywhere near it and never paying late. I've also checked my bank account to make sure nothing untoward has happened there. It's fine but I'll be keeping a close eye on things.
  • Don't worry. You will probably never find out what happened and it probably had nothing to do with any failing by you.

Could be a compromised IT system at a merchant you dealt with. Could even be staff fraud. (Happened in my case where I got £6800 go through on a card before I'd even used it myself!)

As a minor detail, I wouldn't ask for a card to be blocked. I would just report the transaction as unrecognised - as you did. The CC is on the hook for fraud/error. It is their money. So I'd leave it up to them to decide what they want to do.

They decided to block it. I would have been too worried to use it incase it happened again. Oh well, at least it's on the way to getting sorted out. I genuinely started to question my own memory incase I'd bought something but I'd know if I spent that amount. Now to try to remember if I bought something at 33.39 incase there was a staff error or something along those lines.

It will indeed be a British Airways flight, the 125 number is what all BA ticket numbers start with. They will all show as purchased in London even if bought on the web. If you think the card has been fraudulently used, BA may be able to trace it by the ticket number

That definately wouldn't be me, I'm soo skint that if I had to fly somewhere, it'd be budget all the way, lol. Hopefully it's all fairly straight forward to sort out. The person I spoke to said that they couldn't say how long the investigation would take but that I should keep my account in order. Other than this 1 thing, it has been. I kind of feel better that it's been blocked and a new card, pin etc are being issued. Would hate for this to get sorted out then happen again.

Thanks for all the info and re-assurance.

If the flight is sometime in the future it might be possible for the Boys in Blue to be at the check-in to, er, "greet" the perpetrator.

Just spoke to BA and they've got it in their system as fraudulant and it's been picked up. Wouldn't say anymore than that. Thankfully I haven't got a large credit limit so not a huge amount of damage done. Now off to phone Vanquis and speak to them again.
